What every political advertisement must include under Regulation (EU) 2024/900

Clear Political Label

Every ad must be clearly and visibly labelled as political advertising, distinguishable from editorial content.

Sponsor Identity

Must name who paid for the advertisement, including the political actor on whose behalf it was published.

Election Link

Must disclose which election, referendum, or legislative process the advertisement relates to.

Targeting Disclosure

Must state whether personalised targeting or ad-delivery techniques were used. Explicit consent required for any targeting.

Public Repository

All online political ads must be available in a public, searchable repository linked from the ad itself.

No Foreign Sponsors

Political ads from outside the EU are banned in the 3 months before any election or referendum.

About the Regulation

Regulation (EU) 2024/900 on the Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising was adopted on 13 March 2024 and applies from 10 October 2025. It covers political advertising at EU, national, regional and local level across all member states.

In Ireland, An Coimisiún Toghcháin (the Electoral Commission) is the designated competent authority and national contact point. The regulation was implemented in Irish law by S.I. No. 474/2025.
